Big Changes for 82 Year Old Kawartha Golf Club

Media Release
Kawartha Golf and Country Club Revitalization Plan is Endorsed with Overwhelming 92% Support
At a special meeting of the Members of Kawartha Golf and Country Club last night, 92% voted in favour of the Revitalization Plan endorsed by the Board of Directors.  This tremendous commitment to the sustainability of this historic golf club leads the way to the following significant changes and opportunities for the golfing community:
  1. New facilities including Club House, Practice Area and Maintenance Buildings
  2. Restructured Membership Categories,
  3. Fresh Corporate Organization ,
  4. Long Term Fiscal Stability
In summary, the following points highlight our all inclusive plan:
  • Land sale of 21 acres fronting Clonsilla Avenue will create new opportunities for further development in the city.
  • An 8.5 million dollar investment in our city will provide a much needed quality club house and  banquet facility with significant capacity in an ideal local setting designed by renowned architect Richard Wengle
  • 2 new holes designed by architect Ian Andrew will enhance the Stanley Thompson Course
  • New club house facilities will attract prominent events and  tournaments, positively impacting tourism to our city
  • The Plan will provide increased retention of local business and increased employment opportunities in the community
  • Kawartha was recently ranked 13th in Canada for courses offering some public play. (Canadian Golf Magazine….June 6, 2014) The new facilities and enhancements to the golf course should stabilize and improve our National Ranking.
  • Under Corporate Restructuring, the current debenture program is eliminated, and with the new Membership Framework, we have provided the opportunity for all golfers to enjoy Kawartha Golf and Country Club.
  • A fiscally responsible plan secures the stability of Kawartha as a prominent historic city golf course for years to come.  We are 82 years old this year and look forward to the 100th anniversary in 2032.
In the heart of our great city, Kawartha Golf and Country Club will provide a National Class Golf Facility with a variable membership structure within reach of all golfers. The powerful endorsement of the membership underscores the comprehensive nature of the plan and assures the success of Kawartha Golf and Country Club.

Quote from new GM Kevin Greenwood:
“Kawartha Golf & Country Club is one of the best and purest golf courses in Canada, and I am pleased that it’s Membership and Directors have confidently supported a plan to move the Club forward.  They have demonstrated forward-thinking and a true understanding of what it takes to be successful in this competitive market; and I am excited to be a part of what is to come.”

Monday, June 17, 2013, Peterborough

A record 120 golfers participated in the ninth annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament at Peterborough Golf & Country Club on Thursday, June 13, 2013 helping to raise more than $30,000 in support of Trent University’s varsity programs and athletes.

The sold-out tournament was a shotgun scramble format that included contests throughout the day. Guests included leaders from the Peterborough Petes, members of the Trent Board of Governors, University senior administrators, CHEX general manager Michael Harris, and tournament sponsors.

As part of the prestigious tournament, guests were also treated to a barbecue lunch, as well as a decadent refreshment tent on the course, provided by Aramark. After a day on the links, golfers enjoyed a reception and dinner at Peterborough Golf & Country Club. A silent auction, featuring many outstanding items, including golf packages at Wildfire and Mill Run Golf Clubs, as well as a wine tasting package at Le Petit Bar, a Blue Jays ticket package, patio set, barbecue, hotel accommodations, and more, was also held.

All proceeds from the annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament go towards supporting the varsity program at Trent University and athletic financial awards. These awards are designed to assist student athletes with a record of outstanding academic and athletic performance and demonstrated financial need.

“Community support is essential in building a quality and successful varsity program at the university level. The success of the 2013 President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament is a fabulous example of the amazing support for the student athlete experience from the Peterborough community,” said Bill Byrick, director of Athletics at Trent. “Money raised from this event will be dedicated to athletic scholarships used to attract the best and brightest student athletes to the University. It will also enable us to put in place additional supports, such as academic support, medical support, strength and conditioning and year-round training for our student athletes. Many thanks to all who participated and sponsored our ninth annual tournament. We look forward to welcoming the community out to our varsity games and events this fall and winter to see our remarkable student athletes in action.”

The 2013 Winning Foursome title went to the team from tournament sponsors J.J. McGuire, which included: Leo Urrassio, Paul Desousa, Jack Franzin, and Christine Morriera.
