Starting next week On the Links TV will return for another season. Our first episode will feature all the changes to the clubhouse at Tamarac Golf and Country Club in Ennismore. Head Pro Kelly Mills will also let us in on the exciting plans he has for 2012 his first full season.

I would also like to announce that Karl Lawson is returning to On the Links this season. It's going to be great to have Karl back on the program. If you would like the On the Links crew to visit your golf course or golf event this year just contact us as soon as possible so we can book you in. See you soon.

Champion To Receive Canadian Tour Exemption

Ottawa, Ontario, December 20, 2011: One of Ontario’s strongest male amateur tournaments will be getting even better in 2012. Flagstick Golf Magazine Publisher Jeff Bauder announced Tuesday that the Flagstick Spring Amateur Shootout at Smuggler’s Glen will be adding another benefit for the tournament’s winner starting in 2012.

Currently the winner of the three year-old tournament is awarded a generous Nike Golf prize package, an invitation to return to defend their title, and an exemption to the Ottawa Citizen Amateur Championship. Starting with the 2012 edition of the tournament, slated for play on May 26/27, the winner will also receive an exemption into the recently announced Eastern Ontario Canadian Tour event.

“In working with Dave Dargie and Martin Noe of Evolution Golf, (the promoters of the Canadian Tour event) they felt that they wanted to ensure more local content for their tournament and that our winner would be well-suited to fit that role,” said Bauder. “We appreciate their offer and their recognition of the quality of players we attract to the Shootout.”

Evolution has a four year deal to host the Canadian Tour event which will kick-off in 2012 at Smuggler’s Glen GC from September 3rd to 9th. It will be played at a rotation of courses around Eastern Ontario in successive years. The tournament will announce their title sponsor in the next few weeks.

“We know that in order to be successful and promote golf in the area the best way is to involve the community so we wanted to offer a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Dargie regarding the exemption offer. “We know the Flagstick Shootout is a quality event where the champions have been exceptional players. The winner will be a good representative of golf in the area and help to drive crowds to come out and watch our tournament. It was an easy decision to offer Flagstick the exemption.”

The defending champion of the Flagstick Shootout, Dwight Reinhart, is a former professional with experience on the Canadian and Nationwide Tours. He says that the extra exemption for the winner will be a big boost to the event. In 2011 Reinhart parlayed his Flagstick Shootout win in to an additional victory at the Ottawa Citizen Championship.

“Being a former Canadian Tour member I know that it is extremely important to have a local guy in the tournament to help the fan base,” affirmed Reinhart. “This is a great opportunity for the competitive golfer who might be aspiring to get to the tour and wants to get some experience. If it wasn’t before it certainly puts the Shootout in bold on the calendar.”

The Flagstick Shootout has been gradually tightening up its field through its history and the 2012 edition should see the best grouping of golfers to play it yet. Only the golfers who finished in the top 10 of each flight in 2011 will receive an automatic invite back to the 2012 tournament. The balance of the field of 72 will be filled out from an application process.

Tournaments organizers say they should have the applications ready for release early in the New Year. From those applications a selection committee will choose who will receive the additional invites, with emphasis on playing ability and experience.

In 2011the popularity of the limited field event resulted in a waiting list of more than 30 players.

The Price Is Wright For PGCC Pro

Andrew Wright of the Peterborough Golf and Country Club is one of the newest members of the Canadian Professional Golfers' Association.

Last Tuesday Andrew finished tied for 2nd, at 145, during the 36-hole CPGA Qualifying Tournament at Cambridge G&CC.

After shooting an opening nine 39, Andrew bounced back with an even par 36 on the final nine holes to complete his first round. He then went out and shot the lowest round recorded during qualifying - a sizzling 2 under par 70.

News and Notes From Kawartha Media Day for 66^th Annual Men’s Invitational July 30^th, 31^st, August 1^st.

The tournament practice rounds get underway Friday afternoon with the long drive competition starting at about 6:00pm.

At this time players can pick up their welcome gift as well. Tournament rounds will start at 6:30am Saturday morning.

The shootout or closest to the pin competition will take place on Sunday early evening as well as the players BBQ dinner where they will receive a dinner for them and a guest as part of their entry for the weekend.

Current 2011 club champion and Boston Bruin Marc Savard will be hosting the Stanley Cup on Monday of the Tournament.

The Stanley Cup will arrive at 11am till 5pm for the public to see and to have their photograph taken with in our banquet tent. Marc will be available for pictures with the cup and autographs from 11:00 till 12:30. People will be required to bring their own camera. Then he will be off to prepare for golf. The public is welcome to watch as much golf as they wish.

Parking access at Kawartha Golf on Monday will be restricted to players and volunteers with parking passes

Kawartha has received permission from the following businesses to use their facilities to park on Monday: The Clearing House, Wallace's Conley Collision, Bennett’s Home Furnishings, Scotia Bank and Holy Cross Secondary School including the space available at the board office.

There will be limited shuttling available for those who require it and any handicapped will be allowed to pull up to the clubhouse to drop off and then leave right away.

Expect line-ups for viewing the cup and be prepared to walk up the laneway.

There will be plenty of refreshment and food outlets available for Cup viewers as well. The clubhouse will only be available for players, Kawartha members and volunteers.

GAO To Have Annika Sorenstam at Fundraising Gala

Uxbridge, ON - The Golf Association of Ontario (GAO) announced today that golf legend Annika Sorenstam will be the featured guest speaker at the GAO's 10th Anniversary Gala, set to take place November 3rd, 2011 at Eagles Nest Golf Club in Maple, Ontario.

The Gala will support the Callaway Golf for Kids program, with all proceeds from the evening benefitting the initiative. The evening will also celebrate and highlight the history of the Golf Association of Ontario, ten years after the amalgamation of the Ontario Ladies' Golf Association and the Ontario Golf Association into the single provincial sport body for golf as it exists today.

The GAO is also pleased to announce that the ANNIKA Academy, will serve as the presenting sponsor of the event. The ANNIKA Academy is Annika's boutique golf and fitness school where guests can learn from Annika's personal coaches. Located at Reunion Resort in Central Florida, the Academy that provides individualized and small group golf instruction and custom made fitness programs to help golfers reach their potential.

"These children are the future golfers for Ontario and the future members of the golf clubs in Ontario," said Mills. Shawn Robertson Stays Positive

A year ago almost to the day, Shawn Robertson was a 40 year old CPGA Professional working at Black Diamond Golf Club in Pontypool, Ontario. He played golf every day, often with his then 13 year old son Lucas. Life was good, very good he was as they say ‘living the dream’. Today Robertson continues to live a dream but his dream is much different now.

It was July 11^th 2010 when Shawn’s life would change forever. On his way back from a day of teaching at Black Diamond and travelling on a dirt road to avoid construction, a bee landed in the lap of his best buddy Bill Nikoruck who was driving at the time. Just a second later the two long time friends went crashing into a tree. “Bill was well enough to dial 911 and the jaws of life took 45 minutes to free me from the wreckage but thanks to the paramedics, the ambulance drivers and the Peterborough Regional Health Centre professionals, I'm here and well Robertson told me recently.

There was also 70 nights at Sunnybrook Hospital and hours of surgeries to rebuild his pelvis and then the amputation of a piece of his right leg as well. Seven weeks of rehab later and the Peterborough native received his first prosthetic leg on October 17 of last year. 10 days later but 3 and half months since the accident he finally returned home for good to his family.

“I have my second chance. You only know what that’s like when you go through something as unique as this. I can tell you that I am thankful for the positives it has brought (there are too many to name) and look at everything much, much differently these days. I figure, if I can do it, anyone can.”

So, that’s exactly what Robertson is going to do. In just his first season playing and teaching golf as an amputee the Crestwood grad is already starting to give back to game he loves so much. He’s planning a special day at The Quarry Golf Club this fall. The inaugural Special Needs Golf Day will take place September 17^th and will allow players to experience the 17th and 18th hole from the 100 yard markers through the green regardless of how long it takes or how many shots it takes. The golf club will have a single rider cart for anyone with paralysis, the seat swivels and elevates so that the golfer can be raised to swing with more ease.

Robertson says The Quarry’s vision is to provide a helpful place where those who have a passion for golf, but are otherwise not able to participate because of vision, hearing, prosthetic or wheelchairs issues. He says anything goes “Even those grieving the loss of a loved one who loved golf are welcome, people can get scared, we want them to fall in love with golf again, that’s what its all about” added the now 41 year old.

In the meantime Shawn Robertson is practicing what he’s preaching. He set out Monday night on the 1^st anniversary of his accident to play and walk 18 holes of golf for the first time in a year. Although darkness brought an emotional night to a quick end after 15 holes, Robertson says he was fine and could have played 27 if time was on his side. Who was on his side was his son. “Lucas walked with me and played a tremendous game - best of his life. The mood was breathtaking. I witnessed my son's prowess with pride and excitement” he said after the round. No doubt others watching at The Quarry on this special occasion were saying the same about Lucas’s father. If they weren’t, they should have been.

Exactly one year after he lost half of his right leg in a car accident local golfer Shawn Robertson is turning his misfortune into something positive. Later today (Monday) Shawn and his crew at The Quarry will launch details on a special day coming up in the fall.

For Immediate Release:

We need to get the word out there!!! This is potentially important for certain people's morale - for their mood - for their future. The Inaugural Special Needs Golf Day on September 17, 2011 at The Quarry Golf Club will allow players to experience the 17th and 18th hole from the 100 yard markers through the green - regardless of how long it takes or how many shots it takes. This will be an introduction to the facility so that we might (eventually) get enough players to facilitate a shotgun tournament where proceeds will go directly to War Amps - the organization that subsidizes needy amputees. We will have a single rider cart for anyone with paralysis - the seat swivels and elevates so that the golfer can be raised to a position conducive to optimal impact. These will be available to rent for a seasonal fee and in my experience, medical coverage will assist - if not cover seasonal rental completely.

As an honorary member of the Kinsman Club, I am pleased to say we, the Kinsman will have many volunteers to help with the following unique challenges:

    •    Direct traffic from parking area (wave people in with signage, etc.)
    •    Assist those with special needs (i.e. wheelchairs, shuttle-cart-service for those with canes, etc.) - help them get from parking area to wherever things are happening (putting green, holes 17 & 18, etc.)
    •    We will assist with giveaways/prize presentations (anyone who gets the ball in the hole on the putting green - hole-in-one recognition - name on the radio, etc.)
    •    Ensure folks get back to their vehicles - shuttles, etc.
    •    Take promotional material to each of the retirement residences and offer the admin of each place an opportunity to call me and have me come make a presentation about how anyone can, at very least, putt; and be around peers with similar challenges/special needs

The golf day will serve as an opportunity to inform those with special needs in Peterborough that The Quarry Golf Club in Ennismore will be hosting a free weekly special needs golf day - participants can meet on the putting green and I will coach from a wheelchair. The Ownership, (Don McPherson, Darren Stalteri and Keith Rasmus) have agreed that wheelchairs are allowed on their greens. Carts with blue flags are allowed right beside putting greens and canes/crutches will also be allowed on Quarry greens. This is an exceptional opportunity to grow special needs golf by creating some momentum around the region.

August 1 - 4, as The Quarry's Amputee Instructor, Shawn Robertson will be competing in the National Amputee Open in Montreal put on by The Canadian Amputee Golf Association. The American counterpart, NAGA, has tremendous momentum and many people who otherwise would never have played again are active, happy, healthy people. We can do more of the same right here - in hopes that golf for those with special needs becomes increasingly prevalent.

The Quarry's vision is to provide a consistantly-helpful place where those who have a passion for golf, but are otherwise not able to participate for any number of reasons - any special needs (vision, hearing, prosthetics, wheelchairs - even those grieving the loss of a loved one who loved golf - anything goes) fall in love with golf (and its' social environment - this is 'KEY') all over again.

On Canada Day Weekend, The Quarry donated $5 from every green fee & cart package to Camp Maple Leaf in honour of Fallen Hero, Private Michael Freeman. The proceeds will be going to the upcoming Inaugural Private Michael Freeman Memorial Tournament being held at The Quarry Golf Club, Saturday, September 10th, 2010.

"In anticipation of the aforementioned events, on July 11 (the anniversary of a traffic accident that claimed a retired Canadian PGA Professional's right foot), members of the Canadian Forces from Trenton Air Force Base, professional golfers from as far away as Simcoe, the management & staff of The Quarry Golf Club and other lucky participants will cheer me on as I try to walk 18 holes for the first time since the crash. Mid Am Heads Into 3rd and Final Round At Wildfire

Lakefield, ON: With the second round in the books Graham Hill of Bright’s Grove continues to hold the lead at the Investors Group Ontario Mid-Amateur Championship at Wildfire Golf Club near Lakefield.

Hill, 25, matched his opening round score with a three under par 69 on day two to get him to six under par (138) for the Championship. His round was highlighted by an eagle at the par five twelfth hole. Over the course of two rounds the 2005 Amateur champion has played the par 4’s and par 3’s at even par and has played the par 5’s at six under par. He will carry a slim one stroke lead into the final round on Thursday.

Larry Cooper of Oakville is a shot behind Hill alone in second place after posting a 69 in round two giving him a two-day total of 139 (-5). Despite a bogey on the second hole Cooper, 54, put together a solid round which featured birdies at nine, eleven, sixteen and the par five eighteenth.

Torontonative Scott Sinclair rounds out the top three with a two day total of 141 (-3). The 30 year old carded three birdies to offset a pair of bogeys to post a one under par 71 in round two and sits three back of the lead heading into the third and final round.

The Investors Group Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship showcases Ontario’s best male golfers over the age of 25. After the completion of second round play the field was cut to the low 62 golfers. Final round action will get under way at 7:30 on Thursday morning. The final group of Hill, Cooper and Sinclair will tee off at 10:50am.

Under clear skies on Thursday, 68 golfers participated in the seventh annual Excalibur Golf Tournament at Peterborough Golf & Country Club, helping to raise more than $21,000 in support of Trent University’s varsity programs and athletes.

Sponsored by Bell, the tournament was a shotgun scramble format that included contests throughout the day coordinated by some of Trent’s student varsity athletes. Golfers were also treated to some fabulous refreshments on the course, provided by Aramark. After a day at the course, guests were invited to a reception and dinner at Trent University. The gourmet food was donated entirely by Aramark.

All proceeds from the annual Excalibur Golf Tournament go towards supporting the varsity program at Trent University and athletic financial awards. These awards are designed to assist student athletes with a record of outstanding academic and athletic performance and demonstrated financial need. Each donation is matched dollar-for-dollar by the government’s Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) program.

“As we continue to build our varsity program at Trent, it is important that we support our student athletes any way we can to help them succeed both academically and athletically,” said Bill Byrick, director of Athletics at Trent. “The athletic scholarships and bursaries that will be created through the proceeds of this tournament will help to attract great athletes to Trent and assist them in reducing their financial challenges. On behalf of our athletes, thank you to all of the sponsors and participants of this event. It is inspiring to see the amount of support in the community for our varsity program and for our student athletes.”

The 2011 Winning Foursome title went to the VIP team of leaders behind the Peterborough Petes, general manager Dave Reid, head coach Mike Pelino and assistant coach Jody Hull, together with hockey commentator and former NHL player Greg Millen. Winners of Closest-to-the-Pin were Laurie Robertson (Ladies) and John Casserly (Men). Longest Drive winners were Marilyn Strain (Ladies) and Todd Vandonk (Men).

Trent Excalibur Golf Tournament Has Openings

Proceeds from this annual tournament support varsity athletes and the creation of Athletic Financial Awards, to assist student athletes with demonstrated financial need and outstanding academic performance. Each donation is matched dollar-for-dollar by the government's Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) program. Last year’s tournament raised an impressive $30,000.

Did you have enough time this past weekend to play 18 ? Perhaps you got out for a quick 9 between other commitments but left the course feeling it wasn't quite enough. So how does 12 holes or maybe 15 holes grab you ? The golf industry could very well be heading in that direction as more and more people are finding hard to set aside 4-5 hours in one day to get in 18 holes. Simply put most people are busier than ever before.

A 12 hole course opened up last year in Toronto and apparently business has been very brisk.

Almost 20 years ago while undergoing course renovations the Peterborough Golf and Country Club played as a 15 hole track and it worked just fine if ask me. If you are pressed for time or perhaps you are even getting a bit tired, playing 12 at Kawartha is perfect as it brings you right to the parking lot or to the back deck for that matter.

Something new to the game is called PowerPlay Golf or PPG for short. This new 9-hole, 2-flag, risk reward format combats the two major issues facing the world of golf, time and money. The game is quite simple, each green has two flags one of which is black. If you go for the more difficult black flag and you get a birdie or better you get double the stableford points. However score a bogey or worse and you lose points.

At the very least if you only have time for 9 this game will make you think a bit more and it should lead to some fun discussion afterwards while settling a few bets.

Graeme McDowell, Paula Creamer, Ian Poulter and Gary Player are just four of the players who are getting behind PPG. I'm sure the Golf Channel is already working a made for TV version of the game as we speak.

A few local courses that may be perfect venues to try this game out would be Marvel Rapids in Apsley, The Links at Monck's Landing up towards Minden and Iron Woods in Warsaw. That's right Warsaw has its own course. It's not well publicized but it's there just before you arrive in downtown Warsaw turn south and you can't miss it. All three of these courses are perfect if time is a factor and if you are in the area already.

With all this said, there is still no question that 18 hole courses will continue to be the norm and perhaps that’s the way it should be, but don't be shocked if you see more 9 and even 12 hole courses popping up. It's about time or perhaps lack of.

Trent Excalibur Golf Tournament

Trent University’s Department of Athletics & Recreation will once again be hosting the popular Excalibur Golf Tournament at the Peterborough Golf & Country Club (PGCC) on Thursday, June 16, 2011.

All proceeds from the Excalibur Golf Tournament go towards supporting the varsity program at Trent University and athletic financial awards. These awards are designed to assist student athletes with a record of outstanding academic and athletic performance and demonstrated financial need. Each donation is matched dollar-for-dollar by the government’s Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) program.

Registration for the seventh annual tournament is $200 per golfer and $800 for a foursome. In addition to a cart rental and round of golf at one of Peterborough’s most prestigious courses, registration includes: lunch at the PGCC, post-tournament reception and dinner at Trent University, a free Excalibur golf club and the chance to win several prizes.

Changes At Black Diamond

As On the Links first reported on our Twitter page earlier this week a new Head Pro and Director of Operations are now both in place at Black Diamond Golf Club in Pontypool, Ontario.

Andy Sandilands (right) has been at the club since 2006 and will take over as the Director of Operations. Sandilands will be a busy guy as he will also retain his position as Superintendent. Sandilands told On the Links that he's excited about the new challenge of doing both jobs "It was a great opportunity for me because I have a great deal of pride in our club and having the opportunity to manage the whole club gives me a lot of opportunity to turn my visions into reality.

My first order of business was to hire a Director of Golf, my first choice was Bobby Hayden (below) and he accepted the position and was excited to be a part of a great team" added Sandilands.

"Bobby brings a lot of years of exceptional customer service and his tenure at Cherry Downs will bring us a wealth of knowledge. There are a lot of new and very exciting things happening at Black Diamond this year". Sandilands says the club is really going to focus on member services and announce some great incentives for daily fee players. "Customer service, feedback and value will be front and centre for Black Diamond this year" Sandilands added.

Sandilands takes over from departing General Manager and Head Pro Darren Stalteri who has departed to take over a similar role at The Quarry in Ennismore.

With such acclaimed golf courses near Calgary like Jasper Park Lodge, Banff Springs, Stewart Creek, SilverTip and Kananaskis, it’s often easy to overlook several top-shelf courses within a short drive of Alberta’s largest city. But those hidden gems make a mini golf trail of some of the best courses in the region, particularly with the Rockies as distant backdrops coupled with a variety of unique course designs.

Heritage Pointe Golf Club (above) Located in DeWinton, Heritage Pointe is a 15-minute drive south of Calgary. With Pine Creek meandering throughout the 27-hole complex, the Ron Garl design is highlighted by a plethora of elevated teeboxes and hazards that range from tall fescue grasses to deep bunkers to water, water, everywhere. Each 9-hole section – Pointe, Desert and Heritage - offers a distinct feel for golfers. And combining different nines presents a diverse experience for each visit. The Pointe, at 3,369 yards, is the shortest of the three and features No. 5, a 518-yard par 5 that crosses the creek five times. The Desert (3,573 yards) and the Heritage (3,581) probably present the most challenging 18-hole combination.

The Links of GlenEagles Just 15 minutes northwest of Calgary on the edge of the Rockies sits the Links of GlenEagles, a Les Furber creation that features plenty of elevation changes and magnificent vistas of distant mountains. Escarpments and ravines highlight GlenEagles, which plays 7,019 yards. No. 16, a par 3 with its teebox 130 feet above the hole, stars on the back nine. The straight downhill hole sits beside Bow River, which runs along the edge of the course. The closing hole is a 535-yard par 5 with a sloping green protected by water and a huge bunker complex on the left.

Wolf Creek Golf Course Located in Ponoka, Wolf Creek is worth the two-hour drive north of Calgary. Designed by Rod Whitman, Wolf Creek offers 27 holes of links-style golf, complete with coulees, humps, sod and pothole bunkers, massive waste areas and small traps carved into the sides of hills. A true shotmaker’s course, Wolf Creek’s three nines – West, East and South – also present unique combinations for an 18-hole round. The South (3,516 yards) is the newest and longest at Wolf Creek. An East/West combo isn’t long (6,624 yards), but it requires accuracy, especially on the East’s third hole, a 427-yard par 4 called the Gorge.

Tourism Ireland At Toronto Show This Week

Peterborough-- Spring training for your golf game
Are you and your golf game ready to kick off the new golf season? It’s just about here you know, so let me give you a primer on a few things you’ll need to think about.

Before bringing your clubs out for a new season, give them a good once over to check for issues that could affect your game.

Club Heads

Any scratches, nicks, dents, rust or worn spots ? Examine the face of your woods for cracks –any imperfections here will lead to imperfect shots on the course.

Rattling? Caused by loose weights in the shaft or epoxy that has broken loose, this can be repaired quickly and inexpensively. While it may not affect the playability of your club – it can be distracting when you swing.

Grip Check

Check your grips for wear and tear. Any smooth, shiny or worn spots? Any cracking? It’s time for a grip replacement. Regular players should replace their grips once a year. Re- gripping can make a big difference in the level of enjoyment you experience in your game.

Shafts

Dents or rust on the steel shafts? Avoid possible breakage, and consider having the shaft replaced.

If you play graphite shafts, look for fraying or peeling where the shaft enters the club head. Is there excessive wear at any point on the shaft, particularly where the shaft rests against the bag when you carry it? Depending on the severity, you may need to replace it.

Specs

Are your loft and lie angles correct? A minor change in the lie angle of any club can greatly affect the accuracy of your shot. Many experts recommend that you have yours club specs checked twice a year. This is definitely worth the effort and a small expense when done by a qualified professional. You will be amazed at the ease for more consistent shots by these small adjustments.

Be a wise golfer and check your equipment regularly. Knowing that your equipment is in good shape will put you a step ahead of your competition when you step on the first tee this season. The best players in the game are constantly upgrading the performance of their equipment. Doing so on a regular basis will help you do just the same.

Canadian Golf Journalists Announce Winners

TORONTO, ON (January 3, 2011) – The Golf Journalists Association of Canada is pleased to announce the results of their 2010 Player of the Year awards. The year-end vote is conducted amongst golf journalists from across Canada and internationally who cover golf for a broad spectrum of media including newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and the internet.

Voting in three of the four categories was not even close as there were runaway consensus winners for Male and Female Professional of the Year and Female Amateur of the Year. The Male Amateur category yielded a very close decision from amongst a large list of nominees.

Following are the winners of the 2010 awards:

Male Professional of the Year
Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Saskatchewan had an exceptional rookie year on the PGA Tour, recording three top ten finishes that earned him enough money to place 100th on the PGA Tour Money List, thereby retaining full playing privileges for 2011. DeLaet put together a strong finish to the 2010 season even though he was hampered by a bulging disk in his back. He will undergo surgery in the first week of January and won’t make his first start on the PGA Tour until early March.

Stephen Ames of Calgary was runner-up.

Female Professional of the Year
Hamilton’s Alena Sharp continues to improve with each passing year on the LPGA Tour. In 2010, Sharp finished 56th on the Tour’s Money List, making 15 of 20 cuts with one top ten finish. The Alena Sharp Charity Classic, which she hosts each year, is a major contributor to Alzheimer’s research in her local community of Hamilton and Brantford.

Jessica Shepley of Burlington, Ontario was runner-up.

Male Amateur of the Year
In the only close vote for this year’s award winners, Dave Bunker of Woodbridge came out on top for the top Male Amateur award. After winning the Ontario Match Play and the Ontario Mid Amateur Championships, Bunker played in his first RBC Canadian Open as a 43-year old rookie, nearly making the cut. In August, he repeated as Canadian Mid Amateur Champion thereby ensuring himself a return trip to the RBC Canadian Open at Shaughnessy in 2011. Bunker capped his season off with a repeat win at the Ontario Public Player’s Championship in September.

Toronto’s Albin Choi, who won the Canadian Amateur as a junior, was runner-up.

Female Amateur of the Year
After one of the best seasons ever by a junior golfer in 2009, Brantford’s Jennifer Kirby returned to claim the 2010 award again. Kirby, a 2010 Team Canada member and sophomore at the University of Alabama, was a semi-finalist at the U.S. Women’s Amateur and a quarterfinalist at the British Ladies Amateur Championship. The 19-year old also finished 7th at the Canadian Women’s Amateur and successfully defended her title at the Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship.

Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Ontario was runner-up. Stephanie turned professional late in the season and secured full playing privileges on the LPGA Tour for 2011.

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl., November 25, 2010) - Defending Ontario PGA Pro Am Champions, lead by Canadian PGA Professional David Banks, have taken the early lead at the 2010 Ontario PGA Pro Am at TPC Sawgrass. Under beautiful conditions on U.S. Thanksgiving 26 Canadian PGA Professionals from Ontario are leading 78 amateurs in hopes of catching Banks' and winning the third annual Merit Golf Vacations Ontario PGA Pro Am.

Teams Banks shot 15-under-par in the two person best ball tournament on Dye's Valley course at TPC Sawgrass. Banks will take a four shot lead over Michael Farrugia heading into the second of the four round tournament.
"Our team played ok on the front at 4-under but we really came together on our back nine at 11-under," said Banks following his round. "Andy Pavletich played really well and Ric Wilson made some great birdies for the team," added Banks, who finished tied for 61st place at the Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship earlier this week in Port St. Lucie, Fl.

Kawartha Golf and Country Club's Dan Bathgate (above) and Cameron Thin (St. Catharines) share low professional honours after day one. Bathgate and Thin both shot 2-over-par 74 which is one shot better than Kawartha Head Pro Mark Ahrens and David Banks (Within Range).

Tomorrow teams will play Deer Creek Golf Club in Ponte Vedra Beach followed by a tour around the famed Stadium Course on Saturday and concluding Sunday on Dye's Valley Course.

Former PGCC Pro Big Winner

Former Peterborough Golf and Country Club Head Pro Ian Webb, the Executive Professional / General Manager from Credit Valley Golf & Country Club is the 2010 Ontario PGA Golf Professional of the Year. Webb, who began his apprenticeship under Rocco D'Amelio at Bridgewater Country Club in the Niagara Peninsula, has worked at Credit Valley since 2000 as both the Head Professional and now the General Manager.

"It's a huge thrill for me to have my name added to a list of such decorated and celebrated Professionals," said a humbled Webb. "I've looked up to a number of the past winners my whole life so it's a huge honour to be included on the list," added Webb, a past president of the Ontario PGA.

After 'playing in' in 1984 Webb continued to work at Bridgewater until 1990 when he was recruited to join the staff at St. George's Golf & Country Club under the tutelage of Neil Verwey. Although Webb was only at St. George's for two years he learned a lot from Neil and cherishes his time spent on the hallowed grounds on one of Canada's premier courses.

Webb secured his first Head Professional position in 1993 at the Peterborough Golf & Country Club. At the ripe age of 26 Webb and his wife Helen, began a journey that has been both rewarding a memorable.

"We left Toronto with $15,000 in the ban k only to be $250,000 in debt in one week later. The best part about it is we jumped in smiling," remembers Webb.

Known for his charismatic charm and ability to get the job done, Webb is quick to share the credit with his past and current staff members.

"This award is really all about the people that have helped me throughout my career," added Webb. "I've had some great staff and without Evans Mahoney, Sarah Dombroskie (Boyce), Kevin Russell, Brian Mason, Taylor Kimura and Jon Hackett to name a few, this award couldn't have happened for me," reiterated Webb.

Wildfire's Jeff Mills Wins Shootout

The Birdie Shootout was designed to entice Head Professionals to come out and play in a fun a relaxed environment while still incorporating a competitive element. Unlike traditional stroke play events, players were only responsible for posting birdies on their scorecard.

"I think every player and the sponsors really had fun, I certainly saw and had a lot of laughs with my group and I hope more players will come out next year," added Mills, who played Turnberry for the first time today. "I didn't expect the course to be what it was and I can honestly say I am thoroughly impressed with the entire facility, its mind blowing," commented Mills.

A total of 45 Head Professionals toured Turnberry today in just under three hours. Notable finishes included Dennis Heimpel (Blackhorse), Dan Greenwood (Heron Point) and Brad Dove (Diamond Back) all posting four birdies a piece which put them in a tie for second. A total of 69 birdies were had on the day and each one was worth $144.

Dundas, ON – Kawartha's Roger Self of Peterborough and Terry MacGorman of Toronto captured the 2010 Ontario Senior Men’s Better Ball Championship on Monday at Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club in Dundas, Ontario.

Self, a two-time runner up at the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship (2002, 2007), and MacGorman, who represents Donalda Club, combined for a six-under par 65 to earn a three stroke victory. Playing together for the first time, the duo carded only a single bogey against five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 10th hole.

Stabler and Gaskell Win AGM Pairs Event

The team of Andy Stabler of the On the Links Tour and Kirk Gaskell of Kawartha Golf and Country Club fired 47 stableford points Thursday to win the Alliance Golf Memberships Pairs Championship at Baxter Creek. With the victory the duo will now head to the International Pairs Eastern Canadian finals at Piper's Health on September 20th.

Stabler and Gaskell just edged former champions Marie and Paul Halloch of Newscastle Golf Club by just one point under very windy conditions to win the Ricart Cup. The team of Dave Roche and Jeff Rutherford took third. They finished just 3 points back with 44 points. The father son team of Shayne and Dylan Randall along with defending champions Rhys Jenkins and Chris Maguire tied for 4th with 42 points each. Sue Ellis and Al Crowe from Pine Crest rounded out the top 5 along with Kalvin Andrews and John Whiston.

If Stabler and Gaskell are successful at Piper's Health they will earn a trip to the World Finals in 2011 in St. Andrews, Scotland. The event was also sponsored by Peterborough Hyundai, Moosehead and Pepsi.

Bunker Continues Spectacular Season With Victory at the Public Player Championship

Pontypool, ON: Dave Bunker of Woodbridge finished off the Baka Wireless Public Player Championship with a two under par final round of 70 to claim the title for the second straight year at Black Diamond Golf Club in Pontypool, Ontario.

After an opening with an even par 70 Bunker got off to a great start in round two with birdies at one, three, five and nine to make the turn four under par. He continued his strong play on the back nine however gave a few strokes back with bogeys at twelve, fourteen and sixteen. Despite the bogeys on the back nine Bunker finished strong with a birdie at eighteen and two under par (142) for day and the Championship to claim the title by ten strokes.

This victory caps off what proved to be a very successful 2010. His stellar season also includes victory at the Canadian Mid-Am Championship, the Ontario Match Play, the Investors Group Ontario Mid-Am, and an appearance at the RBC Canadian Open in July.

He now plans to get ready to head back into the classroom as he will return next we to his full time gig as an elementary school teacher. His students will sure to be impressed by “Mr. Bunker’s” stellar 2010 season.

Finishing back of Bunker in second place was Greg Beale of Brooklin. Beale captured the silver medal after a solid second round 74 which paired with his 78 from day one left him at eight over par (152) for the Championship. The top three was rounded out by four time champion Craig Loughry of Courtice who finished with a two day total of 154.

In the B Flight Jim Spencer of Port Hope fired a final round 76 to give him a two day total of 155 and the B Flight gold medal. Roland Hill of Erin claimed C Flight honours with a two day total of 163.

The Baka Wireless Ontario Public Player Championship is conducted by the Golf Association of Ontario and open to golfers who do not hold a membership at a semi-private of private facility and who are members of the GAO Public Player program.

Getting Ready For Long Weekend Tradition

The Kawartha Invitational has been an annual event in Peterborough since 1946. Ron Patterson of Hamilton was the first winner of the event.

In the 64 years of the tournament there have been some prominent champions. Among them are the legendary Moe Norman and Nick Weslock(members of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame), Gerry Kesselring (a member of the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame), Ben Kern (competed on the PGA tour in the early 70s and a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame), Jeff Mills (played the Canadian Tour in the late 90s and presently the Head Professional at Wildfire Golf and Country Club) and Jon Mills (spent 2 years on the PGA tour and is presently 26^th on the Nationwide Tour money list).

Paul Davis of Toronto has the most wins in the history of the event. He won in 1975, 1984, 1989, 1995, and 1996 for a total of 5 wins. Moe Norman, Nick Weslock, Gerry Kesselring, Bob Ptashnik, Bruce Brewer, and Mark Brewer have each won 3 times.

The lowest score in the history of the event is 211 (2 under par) by Mark Brewer in 2005 and Don Smith in 2006. Mark McCullough in 1988 and Derrick Small Jr. in 2003 also shot 211 (1 over par) when the course was playing to a par 70.

There are 11 past champions in the field. They include Warren Rehkopf, Kirk Miller, Roger Self, Dan O’Donaghue, Derrick Small Jr., Kevin Ackford, Reid Ferguson, Mark Brewer, Mark Mackay, Steve Fredericks, and Chris Markle.

Among the favourites this year is Steve Fredericks of the host club. Steve won the recent Kawartha G&CC club championships with a record score of 275 (9 under par). Mark Brewer is the defending champion and is in good form as evidenced by a 3^rd place finish at the recent Ontario Mid-Amateur Championship.

Marc Savard has been runner-up the last 3 years and is due for a win. A possible sleeper this year is Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill. Taylor has had some strong finishes in 2009 and 2010 in Provincial and Canadian events. In 2009 he represented Team Canada at the Triangular Cup in South Africa. He will be attending Kent State University in Ohio on a golf scholarship in September. He should have plenty of local knowledge as he is the baby brother of Jennifer Pendrith, the Greens Superintendant at Kawartha G&CC.

2010 should once again provide some strong competitive golf and produce a worthy champion. The field stands at 200 golfers for this years event!

Divots: On the Links predicted a win by Steve Fredericks a few years back and since he's playing great golf again this year we'll go with Freddy to pick up another championship again this year....

Miller Leads Wes Dixon

Keene, Ont - Kirk "Pencil" Miller leads the Wes Dixon Memorial Tournament after one round at Pine Crest Golf Club. Miller fired an opening round of 69 and sits 1 shot ahead of several others including Bob Dixon (left) who fired a 70 on Saturday. Dixon will try on Sunday to become the first Pine Crest member to win the event in over 25 years. We wish Bob well as he also attempts to capture the event named in honor of his late father Wes Dixon. Spectators are welcome to check out the Father's Day final round on Sunday. Baxter Creek

Had a chance today to play 9 holes with my Dad out at Baxter Creek where he's a member. We ended up whipping around the back nine in about an hour and ten minutes. Now that's my type of golf., fast and furious !!

The course has come a long way since I played it last year. Some of the holes on the back nine have really matured thanks to the hard work by superintendent Bobby Christie and his staff. Had a good chat with Bobby today and his helper Baxter The Dog. Baxter along with Ping out at Pine Crest and Goose over at Peterborough are among the best four legged workers in the business !

Baxter is now 2 and a half and was a present to Christie by the owners of Baxter Creek for Christmas a few years ago. The next time you are at "The Creek" don't be surprised if Baxter hops on your cart for a free ride. Bobby on the other hand can be found busy doing his best to bring "BC" to the next level. He's well on his way.

Bunker Blasts His Way To Victory, Fredricks 26th

Fresh from his victory at the Ontario Men’s Match Play, Woodbridge resident Dave Bunker is the wire-to-wire winner at the Investors Group Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship hosted by Donalda Club.

The defending Canadian Mid-Amateur champion (2008, 2009), lead through all 54 holes to win his second provincial Mid-Amateur victory by a full five strokes. Mirroring the 2007 tournament result when he captured his first title, Bunker was the only player in the field to finish under par. His rounds of 70, 74, and a tournament-best 68 combined for a total score of 212 (-1) and the 2010 trophy.

Kawartha's Steve Fredricks finished T26th after a great final round of 73 today. Chris Markle of Dalewood finished in 22nd spot.

New Jr. Program at PGCC

Peterborough Golf and Country Club is pleased to introduce our new Divot and Junior programs that better represents our youth and gives them an opportunity to grow. The costs to the new program listed below are the same pricing structure to what is already in place with enhanced features to better suit the needs of today’s youth and puts the Club at the forefront of all Junior programs. The programs will be suited for both boys and girls and the opportunity for all Non-Members to let their children play here at the Club. This is a great opportunity for your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends of your children to enjoy this program. Everyone is welcome to join!

Peterborough Golf and Country Club, and our Professional Staff, are working to establish a competitive “Junior Team” program for our Club.

Similar to other sports i.e. soccer and hockey, this team will be made up of players who enjoy, and are looking for, competition, team camaraderie, and game improvement. You will, by its absence, notice that I have chosen not to use playing ability as a pre requisite for this team. Unlike other competitive, city-representative sports, there will be no “try-outs”. Junior Members who believe that the Team’s program is something that they wish to follow may join. Of course this will not be the only program offered at the Club for Junior Members. This is only the AAA Program. Programs for all levels have been established.

I have thought about establishing this Club Representative Junior Team since I began working at PGCC in 2002. With the Junior Members that we will have back in 2010, now seems like the perfect time to start. In my opinion, what it takes to start a team like this, like any other team, is a group of young, enthusiastic athletes who are already quite proficient at the game, serious about improving, and who wish to play competitively. The other ingredients needed are two: (1) a coaching and managerial staff that enjoys teaching, understands competitive sport and is extremely organized, and (2) a strong parental support group. From what I have seen from the players, parents of those players, Club Directors, and our Professional Staff, we have all the necessary ingredients to create a program that will surely succeed.

THE PROGRAM

1) Becoming a Member of a PGCC Junior Golf Team – 4 Levels of this team will exist; 1) AAA (the High Performance Team), 2) Select (the Early Competitive Team), 3) House League (the Recreational Teams), and 4) Divot or Cubs (Players 11 years of age or younger)

i. AAA – This program will cater to the already proficient tournament player. Players on this team will have already set a schedule of provincial, national and international tournaments they wish to play in throughout the summer. The goal of many of these players is to secure post-secondary education via scholarship. A program of this nature requires mandatory attendance for practice sessions and nutrition and fitness instruction. This program will only gain credibility within the golfing community if its participants are successful.
ii. Select – This program is for players who have limited or no tournament experience but who are keen to become more competitive. Younger players just getting started in competitive golf will be exposed to tournament play via exchange days, inter-club matches and select junior invitational tournaments.
iii. House League – All Juniors at the Club will be placed on a House League team, should they choose to be a part of the Junior Field Days that take place on Saturdays – beginning May 15th. We highly encourage all Juniors to take part in this fun program.
iv. Divot “Cubs” Program – The future of Junior golf at PGCC begins with this program. The Divot program is for players 11 years of age or younger and who have a connection with an adult Member at the Club (be it a relation or a sponsor). Divot Members will participate within the framework of the Junior program’s lesson and field day curriculum. Players will learn the basics of the game in a positive and fun environment. Older and more proficient Divots will also be given the opportunity to play in the Club’s House League Program.

2) Fitness Program – It is imperative, in order to compete at each player’s highest level, that Team Members continually improve their physical fitness. Flexibility, strength and endurance are three keys to game improvement that often go unnoticed when evaluating a top player. A great swing is easy to identify, but why that swing looks so effortless and repeatable from the tee-shot on the first hole to the approach shot on the eighteenth hole has everything to do with being in shape. Members of the Professional staff will always be available to mentor athletes in the basics of fitness. As well, opportunity will be given for those wishing to improve their cardiovascular endurance, to do so under the supervision of a member of the golf Professional Staff. Information on this program will be circulated during the Information Session.
3) Team Building – Golf, being an individual closed sport, does not often or easily perpetuate a Team type atmosphere. My number-one goal for all players is to create a Team that takes pride in each other’s accomplishments and the accomplishments of the team as a whole. Success in golf is often measured by the score shot or by the position in the field finished. And, unfortunately, too many players these days, including juniors, often times relate their golf success with their self-worth. This attitude and pressure drives good young players from the game and is something that junior golf must be rid of. Successes will be celebrated as a Team. Improvements in individual games will be because of the positive Team atmosphere. And fun will be had because doing things together, supporting others and being supported is what we all want.
4) Club Representation – Being a team means acting like and looking like a team. Matching golf bags and tournament uniforms serve to symbolize team cohesiveness. In order to offset costs Team Members will be required to fund raise. Fund raising activities include helping out with Senior Member Club events, acting as Professional’s Assistants during Junior Camp and other in-club non-sales events. Again, working as a Team on behalf of the Team will be fun, Club-friendly and will provide the Team with a sense of accomplishment.
These four levels of our Junior Program are being established in order to assist those players who enjoy playing the game at all levels. In no way is it mandatory to become involved in any team program in order to be a Junior Member at the Club.

Registration for all programs will take place Tuesday May 11th at 6:30pm during our information night in one of the first banquet room.

In closing, I am extremely excited about the upcoming year and what it holds in store for all of us. This is a brand new idea and what lies before us, I do not know. Minett, Ontario, March 22, 2010— The landscape for junior golfer training has officially changed, which means instruction today must be about more than just grip, stance and posture. For the junior to become a ‘complete golfer,’ many elements of the game must be mastered. Introducing High Performance Junior Golf Camps, founded by PGA Certified Professional, Greg Coffin, and designed specifically for today’s competitive junior golfer.

Two one-week sessions are being offered in July 2010 at The Rock Golf Club on the sparkling shores of Lake Rosseau, in Ontario’s beautiful Muskoka cottage country.

High Performance Junior Golf Camps integrate the highest level of golf instruction with the best in computerized swing analysis, three-dimensional motion analysis, computerized putting analysis, physical assessments, customized golf fitness program and mental game of golf training. These camps are by far the most comprehensive junior golf camps available to today’s junior golfer. All facets of the curriculum are designed with performance in mind.

Myrtle Beach Gains New Canadian Presence

Weir Going Into Ontario Hall

Uxbridge, ON – The Golf Association of Ontario announced today that Mike Weir has been selected as the 2010 inductee into the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame. Weir’s induction will mark the tenth anniversary of the Hall, which was established in the year 2000 to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments made by Ontarians to the game of golf.

With a new class inducted annually, Weir will become the 55th person to be welcomed into the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame. A former Ontario Amateur Champion (1990, 1992) and Ontario Junior Boys’ Champion (1998), Weir has become one of Canada’s most outstanding professional golfers, capturing numerous national and international titles including eight PGA tour victories.

Weir's most notable achievement to date came in 2003 when the Bright’s Grove, Ontario native captured The Masters Tournament at Augusta National, becoming the first and only Canadian to earn golf’s coveted Green Jacket.

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame, the Golf Association of Ontario will also be inviting back each of the 54 past inductees (or family members in the case of posthumous inductions) to the 2010 induction ceremony to further celebrate Ontario’s rich golf history.

The final date of the 2010 induction ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks.

About Mike Weir

After honing his skills as a young golfer at Huron Oaks Golf Club in Bright’s Grove, Ontario, Mike Weir has catapulted to the forefront of professional golf in Canada with his impressive playing career. At age 16, he captured his first national title with a victory at the 1986 Canadian Juvenile Championship, and followed that up two years later with the Ontario Junior title. He continued to progress with his first Ontario Amateur crown in 1990, and earned a second provincial victory in 1992.

Weir, The Canadian Tour Rookie of the Year (1993), went on to win the BC Tel Pacific Open and the Canadian Masters (1997) as well as the 1998 PGA Tour Q-School. He clinched his first PGA Tour victory in 1999 and has since gone on to win seven more titles including the 2003 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. In that same year, he was awarded the Lou Marsh Memorial Trophy by Canadian journalists as the outstanding Canadian Athlete of the Year.

Weir’s other accomplishments include representing the International Team at the President’s Cup (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007) and representing Canada at three World Cups (2000-2003). In 2009, Weir was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and was also invested as a Member of the Order of Canada.

Well it's been a while since we posted here but I thought I would just take this time to let everyone know that the On the Links Tour is getting set for the 2010 season. Already we have exciting news to announce. It's been confirmed that the Kawartha Golf and Country Club will return as a host venue for our 2nd last tour event next season. The date will be Monday August 23rd starting at 1pm. The other 7 tour dates will be announced starting in early January. Currently we are looking for new sponsors for the On the Links Tour. The 1st Annual Oakland Greens Invitational was held recently (Aug 22nd and 23rd) at the Norwood area course and first round leader Len Sheenan was the overall winner edging out Jeremy Heffernan in a one hole play-off.

Heffernan settled for the second flight championship while Kenny Kent was the third flight winner. Brian Patterson and Grant Nelson won the 4th and 5th flights respectively. Sheenan along with Clayton Heffernan both established the new course record during first round play when they both fired rounds of 73.

Tournament co-organizer Mike Kidd says this year's inaugural event ran smooth and they hope to become part of the unofficial "majors" on the local invitational circuit. "Thanks to the help of all our sponsors and the players we are well on our way to joining the other clubs in the area and becoming perhaps the final big event of the invitational calendar" said Kidd. He added "The course was prepared well and the greens were fast and smooth and the players appreciated that, we also introduced".

The tournament also introduced tournament play to several area juniors who got their first taste of invitational style golf during the event. "We are hoping these young adults will grow with the tournament, we want to continue to grow the game here in Norwood and the eastern Peterborough area" Kidd said.

Chris Maguire and Rhys Jenkins won a 2009 International Pairs qualifier in dramatic fashion at Baxter Creek Golf Club yesterday.

Jenkin's par in a sudden death playoff defeated the Lindsay team of Tammy Peterkin and Tara Sayer.

Both teams finished with 48 stableford points and headed for the 19th hole island green to determine the winner.

The event, presented by Alliance Golf Memberships, was the sixth stop for the On the Links Tour. With the victory the duo advances to the Canadian finals to be played at Piper's Heath in Milton, Ont., on Sept. 21.

The twosome also won matching Callaway golf bags which will be customized with their names courtesy of Kevin and Garrett Fitzgerald of AGM.

If victorious in Milton, the pair will advance to Scotland for 2010 world finals.

In yesterday's playoff, after Sayer put her tee shot in the water and Maguire put his in the front trap, it came down to Jenkins versus Peterkin. Despite a solid chip, it took Peterkin three shots to get down from the left fringe while Jenkins lagged his putt up the green. He then sunk the uphill putt for the win.

The team of Kalvin Andrews and John Whiston finished just one point out of the playoff while Sue Ellis and Al Crowe were two points back.

Kawartha Invitational Aug 1-3rd

The first Kawartha Invitational was held in 1946 and was held as a three-day amateur tournament. The Invitational as it is better known has hosted many well-known golfers such as Ben Kern, Moe Norman, Warren Rehikopf, PGA Tour Player Jon Mills, Nick Weslock, brothers Paul & Don Davis, Dan O'Donaghue, Roger Self, Kirk Miller & Derrick Small Jr.. Today it is one of the only three day Invitational in Ontario to our knowledge.

The Invitational starts next Saturday August 1st and continues Sunday and Monday. The tournament wraps up with trophies being handed out late Monday afternoon.

Kawartha is well known for its hospitality and the Invitational is a tournament that has fostered many great memories, friendship and exceptional golf.

Local Pro Heading To US Open

After winning a playoff to become an alternate to play in the 2009 U.S. Senior Open John Rushnell of Black Diamond crossed his fingers and hoped he would get that fateful call to play. Fortunately for John that call came this morning from the USGA informing him he would be joining fellow Canadian PGA Professional Gar Hamilton (Mississaugua) at Crooked Stick for the U.S. Senior Open on July 30 - August 2, 2009.

"I have been waiting by my phone since the qualifier and now I feel like a kid in a candy store," said an elated Rushnell. "My first call was to my wife (Kim) and she screamed she was so happy," he added.
Rushnell's qualifying site was at Fox Chapel Golf Club just outside of Pittsburgh where the Oshawa native shot a round of even par 70 on June 25, 2009. After winning a playoff to become the first alternate at his site, USGA officials informed him that an alternate usually gets in from Fox Chapel.

"I think it has to do with the quality of the field and possibly the rating of the golf course in terms of difficulty," explained Rushnell. "I don't know for sure how I was selected but in the end it doesn't really matter, I'm in the Open!"Rushnell, who won last week's Ontario PGA Senior Summer Championship in Kleinburg will begin his preparation tomorrow at Black Diamond Golf Club where he is the Teaching Professional.

"Physically my game is there, but mentally I will be working on my pre shot routine and really concentrating on all my shots," said Rushnell. "My game this year has been great and I am playing for the shear enjoyment of the game rather than score, money etc..."

The simple fact that Rushnell qualified to play in the U.S. Senior Open is a Cinderella story on its own. You see Rushnell is a retired GM worker who began a second career as a golf professional in 1997. Working nights at GM and days at Oliver's Nest Golf Club, Rushnell moved through the Canadian PGA ELITE Apprentice program covering off all the requirements as quickly as he could obtaining his Class 'A' status in 2002. "I began playing golf when I was 28 years old and absolutely fell in love with the game," said Rushnell now 54. "I really started playing well when I was 40 and had aspirations of playing professionally as a senior," continued Rushnell who narrowly missed a European Senior Tour card in 2003 finishing in 33rd place after a disastrous 8 on a par 3. "I would still be chasing the dream, but it comes down to economics and I just can't justify it," he added. The chance to compete in the U.S. Senior open is a dream come true for Rushnell who retired from GM in 2002. "I am going to have a blast, this is a perk in life especially at our age," said Rushnell, who now focuses on helping other golfers achieve their golf dreams. Ontario PGA Senior Summer Title to His Trophy Case

(Kleinburg, Ont. July 6, 2009) - John Rushnell (Black Diamond) shot 5-under-par 66 en route to victory at the Ontario PGA Senior Summer Championship. This was Rushnell's second Senior Summer victory with the last coming in 2005 at Glendale Golf and Country Club.

The victory couldn't have come at a better time for Rushnell, who will tee it up next in the Canadian PGA Senior Championship which goes later this week in Ottawa. Rushnell attributed his fine play to a recent round that was played in a U.S. Senior Open qualifier in Pittsburgh, PA.

"I played well today, the course was great and I'm feeling good about my game," added Rushnell who will head to Ottawa tomorrow. "I've had a hot putter as of late," added Rushnell, who shot 70 and grabbed the first alternate spot at his qualifying site for the US Senior Open.

Freddy Wins Wes Dixon

Congratulations to Steve Fredericks who won a 6 hole playoff against fellow Kawartha member Mitch Starr to claim the 26^th annual Wes Dixon Memorial golf tournament on Sunday. Because of the rain the first round was washed out so it became a 18 or as it turned out 24 hole shootout.

Both Steve and Mitch are class acts and it’s too bad there had to be a loser on this day but I’m happy for “Freddie”. He’s a solid family man who I’m sure was excited to win this one on Father’s Day.

The event itself is a tribute to the late great Wes Dixon who’s son and daughter, Bob and Jan have taken the course he built into one of the best spots in all of the Kawarthas. Pine Crest is like family to many, it’s a place you can always return to and it always feels like home no matter how long you have been gone.

The 2009 VIA Rail Canada Cup final is set for tomorrow at 12 noon EST. Representing the Ontario PGA will be Peterborough native and former Kawartha member Jerry Hinds (Heritage Hills) and Danny King (Academy Tee at Magna) and representing the Quebec PGA will be the team of Carl Desjardins (Le Blainvillier) and Yvan Beauchemin (Grand mere).

Hinds who was one of the top juniors at Kawartha Golf and Country Club back in the 80's and King battled the elements this afternoon in what was an up and down match verses the team of Dave Levesque (Rattlesnake Point) and Billy Walsh (Beacon Hall). Rain soaked metropolitan Montreal for the majority of the day while the players contested a seesaw battle.

"Those were the toughest conditions I've ever played in," said a rain soaked Jerry Hinds who made a clutch birdie putt on 17 to bring the match back to all square.

The real turning point in the match came when Danny King jugged a 7 Iron from 158 yards into the wind on the par 4 14th hole, which brought the match to all square.

"We had good communication with one another today and that really helped us, especially in these conditions," said King. "Tomorrow we will have to do more of the same in order to come out on top."

Both teams cruised through their respective moring matches. Levesque and Walsh beat Eddie Maunder and former Peterborough Golf and Country club member Reggie Millage 4 & 3 while Hinds and King beat Colin Murray (Peninsula Lakes) and Mark Napier (Rattlesnake Point) 3 & 2.

Extreme golf: million dollar Par 3 Forget pitch and putt - this tee-off point on top of a 430m mountain in South Africa is the hardest golf shot in the world, and more than $US1 million awaits the player who can score a hole in one. Players must take a helicopter to the top to play the longest - and highest - par three on the planet. Taking the shot also requires courage - a player needs to teeter terrifyingly close to the edge of the mammoth hillside. Indeed, the Extreme 19th Hole is so high the ball takes almost 30 seconds to reach the ground. Channel Nine cricket commentator Mark Nicholas recently joined an elite list to have the shot in just three swings. "It was awesome, riveting and phenomenal," he said. "It's like the end of the world when you get up there and it's an awful lot of fun. "It's such an adrenalin rush taking the helicopter up and then rushing back down." The hole is based at the Legends Golf and Safari Resort, within the Entabeni Safari Conservancy in South Africa 's north-eastern Limpopo Province . The other 18 holes were designed by world golfing legends including Trevor Immelman, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington and Australia 's Robert Allenby. A round of golf - including a buggy and lunch - will set you back R450 ($70). The Extreme 19th costs is R6700 ($1060) per four ball, that includes helicopter ride, souvenir cap and glove and a DVD of you playing the hole. So far, no one has even come close pocketing the million-dollar prize, but Harrington became the first golfer to conquer the hole within par. Harrington said: "This is the type of innovation and excitement we need to get more people playing golf. "There aren't many new innovative ways to play the game but this is certainly one of the best. "I think this hole is awesome - I love the whole experience, the helicopter, the views, the drama and having the green the shape of Africa . "And now I've got bragging rights over all the other professionals who have played this and not managed to make a three. I love everything about it."

Former PGCC Star Wins OPGA Event

On a day where the field scoring average was just over 78, former Peterborough Golf and Country Club memeber Reggie Millage stuck to his game plan and won his first Ontario PGA Spring Championship. Reggie's round of 2-over-par was enough to secure a playoff with Danny King, who finished at even par for the day and the tournament.

On the first hole of the playoff Reggie hit his tee shot on 18 into the left rough. King hit a solid drive down the centre of the fairway. Millage's second shot which was over 200 yards from the green stayed under the tree line and ended up just short of the green. From an uphill lie King hit his second shot into the left greenside bunker. From the bunker, King hit his third to four feet. Millage hit his third shot to two feet and made his putt while King missed his.

"It was a grind today, but I knew par would be a good score," said Millage. "This is my first win on the Ontario PGA regular tour and winning against this caliber field feels great."

Millage is a former guest of On the Links Radio and we congratulate him on his victory.

Tour Kicks Off

The 2009 On the Links Tour season kicks off this Thursday May 28th at Six Foot Bay.

It's the first of 8 events on the season this year and is sponsored by Ricarts.

Cost to play is only $65 however if you are an Alliance Golf Member you'll save $10. Price includes golf, cart and a hot dog at the turn.

Format is a stableford scoring system and we'll also be playing AGM closest to the pins on all par 3's as well as 2 long drives.

If you would like to sign up for all 8 events you can do so as well. Test drive the tour on Thursday and decide after if you want to play full time. If you do we'll put your daily fee from the day towards your 2009 membership.

Tee Times begin at 11:30am. The last tee time available is 12:48.

2 for 2 For Alex

8 year old Alex Pineo has done it again. The Lakefield resident and St. Paul's student won his divison again this weekend at a CJGA event. Playing at the Rolling Hills Golf Club, Alex
shot a 3 over par 34 despite a double bogey on the first hole and won by two
strokes. He also won the Lexus closest to the pin competition but unfortunately for Alex's dad Rob the prize was not a Lexus ! Last week Alex won the first event of the season with a win in Oakville. Both tournaments were qualifying events for the 2009 World Junior Golf Championships in San Diego in July. With back to back wins Alex is all but a lock to earn a spot west later this summer.

56th Peterborough Men’s Invitational Golf Tournament

This year’s tournament will be held Saturday July 11th and Sunday July 12th 2009. The field will consist of 120 players on a first come basis. They will have 5 flights based on entry with gross prizes only presented in each flight.

Entry fee this year remains the same as previous years - $200.00 for non members and $125.00 for members. Entry fee includes a practice round that can be played on any Saturday or Sunday after 2pm. For those residing more than 100km’s away, the practice round may be played July 10, 2009.

8 Year Old Pineo Wins One For Mom

8 year old Alex Pineo gave his mom a mother's day present she'll never forget. The youngster from Lakefield won the first event of the Canadian Junior Golf Season yesterday at Oakville Executive Golf Club.

Despite extremely cold and windy conditions Alex shot a four over par and won by one stroke over a field of 19 junior golfers from across Ontario.

This tournament was also a qualifying tournament for the 2009 World Junior Golf Championships in San Diego in July.

Alex is a grade 2 student at St. Paul's Elementary in Lakefield and is a member of the Katchawano Golf and Country Club.

Alex has been golfing since he was 3.

So you’ve had lessons, play golf several times a week, and you still can’t figure out why your game hasn’t improved. You may have even bought a new set of clubs because you were so frustrated, but you are still hooking and slicing every shot. So what could the problem be? Are you just destined to be a bogey golfer for the rest of your life?

Tony Porter may have the answer.

He is the owner and operator of Tony’s Clubhouse in Peterborough, Ontario. Open for a 4th golf season, Porter has provided many golfers in the area with the answers to their golf games.

“Some people go out and spend thousands of dollars on new clubs, but they neglect to spend the time and get them fitted properly. It can make all the difference,” said Porter.

Porter offers many products and services including; golf equipment repairs, re-gripping, re-shafting, club fittings and new golf equipment sales.

“There are so many people that don’t have the right clubs. We all have different swings, the consistent thing should be the club. It makes a big difference,” stressed Porter.

A graduate of the golf repair and fitting program at Golf Works Canada, Porter likes to work with clients on an individual basis. He runs his business by appointment only, and takes the time to get to know each golfer’s swing.

“I like to meet up with clients out at a local driving range or course, have them hit some balls, and I critique their swing. It’s amazing how a few simple adjustments can improve someone’s game.”

Re-gripping costs range from five to twenty dollars.

Porter plans on being at this year’s Peterborough Home Show, and is having two demonstration days, tentatively at Liftlock Golf Club on June 5th and 6th.

“We bring in clubs, let golfers hit a few balls and try new clubs out with various shafts and grips. Most people end up walking away with a new club.”

Porter has been an avid golfer for 15 years and enjoys golfing in the Peterborough Area. You can find him roaming the fairways of his favourite course, Six Foot Bay, or at his other job at Trent University. He also plans on playing a few of the events for the On The Links Tour. So don’t hesitate to introduce yourself and talk about your golf game if you see him at one of the events.
